Zyprexa is the world’s best selling schizophrenia drug with a projected $4 billion in sales for all of 2003. In September 2003, the FDA finally requested the drug companies of the six atypical antipsychotic drugs, including Zyprexa include warnings on drug labels for diabetes and hyperglycemia. Zyprexa has been one of the most controversial antipsychotic drug treatments in regards to diabetes because of its well-known link to weight gain in some patients. The Zyprexa lawsuits filed claiming product-liability is not good news to Eli Lilly as Zyprexa accounts for one third of the company’s sales.

Zyprexa, introduced in 1996, is the largest-selling drug among the class of antipsychotics, with more than 17 million people worldwide having used Zyprexa. The drug was first approved for use in the United States for the treatment of schizophrenia, a mental illness in which patients suffer hallucinations, delusions and withdrawal. Four years later Zyprexa was approved for short-term treatment of acute manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder.

Much of the trial has focused on a study Lilly did using beagles to show Zyprexa has fewer side effects than similar drugs, making it deserving of its separate patent, which runs from 1993 to 2011. Zyprexa ... was covered by a broad patent on a family of like compounds. That patent expired a year before Zyprexa went on the market in 1996.

Zyprexa® is thought to have a higher risk of weight gain than some of the other atypical antipsychotics. No one can predict how much weight a person will gain on any medicine. However a comprehensive treatment approach with an “atypical” antipsychotic such as olanzapine would ... include exercise, diet and monitoring for weight gain as well as diabetes.

Zyprexa (olanzapine), manufactured by Eli Lilly, is the brand name of a drug used to treat schizophrenia, acute, mixed, or manic episodes of bipolar disorder. It was approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996. This new atypical antipsychotic drug reduced some side effects without elevating white blood cell count in users. The active ingredient in Zyprexa, olanzapine, is believed to work by opposing the transmission of serotonin and dopamine. Serotonin is involved in the regulation of sleep, appetite, sexual desire, and mood, while dopamine helps control movement, cognition, and motivation.

Zyprexa differs from Clozaril in side effects. Zyprexa does not cause seizures or agranulocytosis, a serious deficiency of a type of white blood cells that could be fatal. Although Clozaril works very well to treat schizophrenia, it requires a weekly blood draw and weekly prescription refills because of the monitoring for agranulocytosis. Weekly blood drawing and refills are not necessary with Zyprexa. Zyprexa ... differs from Clozaril in that it does not cause excessive drooling. Zyprexa may produce more extrapyramidal side effects (tremor, akathisia, and muscle stiffness) than Clozaril, however.
