A Republican senator has asked drugmaker Eli Lilly & Co. to turn over documents relating to the potentially illegal marketing of its antipsychotic drug Zyprexa. Sen. Charles Grassley says concerns that Lilly marketed the drug to doctors for off-label use, even while it was aware of the risk of Zyprexa side effects.

Evidence dating back to the 1950’s tied the use of Zyprexa and similar drugs to increased risk of diabetes, pancreatitis, hyperglycemia and other pancreas-related illnesses. Zyprexa’s maker, Eli Lilly, continued to aggressively market the drug despite its known risks.
alt text Lilly has plenty to lose if the truth comes out and doctors and consumers decide the risks associated with Zyprexa far outweigh the benefits. In 2005, Zyprexa represented 30% of the company’s total sales.

Animal studies suggest that Zyprexa may increase the risk of breast cancer, although human studies have not confirmed such a risk. If you have a history of breast cancer, see your doctor regularly for checkups.
