Manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly, Zyprexa... known as olanzapine, is a medication that is used in the treatment of various psychotic disorders such as bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia. This drug, approved by the Food and Drugs Administration in 1996, works in the same way as a number of similar medications – by blocking certain receptors on the nerves of the brain. This is a prescription only medication, which has been widely prescribed for nearly ten years. However, as with many other drugs, zyprexa has been linked to a wide range of side effects, some more serious than others.

Zyprexa comes as a tablet and an orally disintegrating tablet to take by mouth. It usually is taken once a day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Olanzapine exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. To take the orally disintegrating tablet, use dry hands to peel back the foil packaging.

Zyprexa, made by Eli Lilly and Company, was approved to treat schizophrenia by the FDA in 1996 and was approved as a treatment for bi-polar disorder in 2000. In the last few years, Zyprexa has been increasingly prescribed for 'off-label' uses that it was never intended for, including treating non-severe depression and sedating the elderly in nursing homes. These additional uses have helped Zyprexa become one of Eli Lilly's most popular drugs with revenues of over 4 billion dollars a year.
