Zyprexa is an atypical antipsychotic. It may increase the risk of death when used to treat mental problems caused by dementia in elderly patients. Most of the deaths were linked to heart problems or infection. Zyprexa is not approved to treat mental problems caused by dementia.

Zyprexa (generically known as Olanzapine) is a drug that has been approved for treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar mania. The drug has now been linked to diabetes mellitus, hyperglycemia, pancreatitis, and blood sugar disorders. So far, 288 cases of diabetes have been reported in Zyprexa patients; 23 of those cases proved fatal.

Diabetes is similar to this where patients have blood sugar regulation problems. Patients with an existing diabetes condition should avoid Zyprexa because it could make their condition worse.
