Zyban: Smoking
built 645 days ago
In the United States, Zyban has been prescribed to more than 5 million smokers since it was approved by the FDA, as a prescription anti-smoking drug in 1997. Previously, it was available as an antidepressant under the brand name Wellbutrin.

Treatment with Zyban begins while you are still smoking. Zyban needs about a week to reach an effective level in your body; so to improve your chance of success, you should not attempt to quit until the second week of treatment. Set a firm date for quitting. If you are still smoking after that date, your odds of breaking the habit will be worse. You should keep taking Zyban for 7 to 12 weeks.

Zyban is the first smoking cessation that comes in a pill. Zyban is nicotine-free, which means you can continue smoking with Zyban until you're ready to quit. Zyban acts on the part of your brain that craves nicotine. When used properly, Zyban helps most smokers quite for good in just 7 to 12 weeks.

Zyban is safe for most people to use. However, it may cause seizures if large doses are consumed. Tell your doctor if you have ever had a seizure, brain tumor, head injury, or an eating disorder, of if you are taking any anti-psychotics, tranquilizers, or any other antidepressant medications. Your doctor ... needs to know if you have ever had an overactive thyroid, heart, liver, or kidney disease, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, or difficult urinating. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding, tell your doctor before taking Zyban. If you get pregnant while on Zyban, contact your doctor.

Like all medicines, Zyban may cause side effects. Do not rely on this summary alone for information about side effects. Your doctor can discuss with you a more complete list of side effects that may be relevant to you. Hypertension (high blood pressure), in some cases severe, has been reported when taking Zyban alone and in combination with nicotine replacement therapy (for example a nicotine patch). The most common side effects include dry mouth and difficulty sleeping. These side effects are generally mild and often disappear after a few weeks.

When using Zyban, many patients have reported experiencing minimal symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. A patient usually will start taking Zyban while they are still smoking and will set a stop smoking date for 7 days later. The drug is then continued for another 7-10 weeks after that. Rates of success have been shown to be almost double that of any placebo effect.
