Zyban is a drug used, very successfully, to treat nicotine addiction directly. In this case it is different to the way other anti-smoking agents work, such as nicotine gum and patches, since these simply supply an alternative source of nicotine other than cigarettes. Zyban works at the neurological level, reducing the craving for nicotine in any form.The active ingredient in Zyban is bupropion, a relatively weak inhibitor of the neuronal uptake of dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine. Chemically, bupropion is related to phenylethylamines and has a relative molecular weight of 276.2. Although, bupropion was initially marketed as an anti-depressant (Wellbutrin), it is chemically unrelated to tricyclic, tetracyclic, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or other known anti-depressants.

How to use this product: Take Zyban exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The normal recommended startup dose for Zyban is one 150-mg tablet in the morning for the first 3 days. On the fourth day, begin taking one 150-mg tablet in the morning and one 150-mg tablet in the evening. Doses should be taken at least 8 hours apart. If you forget to take a dose, DO NOT take an extra Zyban tablet to "catch up." Instead, wait until your next scheduled one.

Zyban has not been tested in pregnant women. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, do your best to quit smoking with the aid of counseling and support before turning to drug therapy. For the sake of the baby, you should avoid smoking or taking nicotine in any other form while pregnant. Zyban appears in breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. Ask your doctor whether it will be better to discontinue the medication or to stop breastfeeding.
