Zuni Indians: Zuni Pueblo
built 615 days ago
The Pueblos, probably the Zuni, were first encountered by the Spanish in 1539, by the Spanish Franciscan missionary Marcos de Niza (1495-1558). A year later the Spanish explorer Francisco V·squez de Coronado, searching for the legendary Seven Cities of CÌbola, led an expedition among the Hopi; failing to find any treasure, he withdrew. In 1598 the Spanish occupied the Pueblo country, and by 1630 Spanish missions were established in almost every village. A mass Pueblo revolt in 1680 drove the Spanish from the territory. No other Indian group succeeded in doing this, and the Pueblo were not reconquered until 1692. Few of the missions were reestablished, and most of the villages continued their ancient religion.
zuni1744_sm.jpg Zuni Pueblo looks very different today than it did a century ago. In building new houses or rehabilitating old structures, the Zuni make use of modern construction materials and techniques to provide modern, weatherproof housing. In addition, since the 1960s, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has been replacing community architecture with commercial housing. HUD houses now constitute approximately 30 percent of the housing units of Zuni Pueblo, with much of it concentrated in subdivisions that are on the outskirts of Zuni Pueblo.

Frank Hamilton Cushing was an ethnographer and early participant observer to the Pueblo of Zuni, where he lived from 1879-1884. He was adopted into the Zuni tribe. During the late 1880's he interested wealthy socialite Mary Hemenway into funding an archaeological expedition to find the origins of the Zuni people. The project began in 1887 with the excavation at Los Muertos, AZ and then moved to the Zuni Reservation. Cushing became ill and was removed from the Project in 1889. He continued to work for the Bureau of American Ethnology during this time and until his death in 1900.
