The Zuni Indians (pronounced Zoo-nee) are a southwestern tribe that once inhabited the area now known as Arizona and New Mexico. Zuni, Virginia (pronounced Zoo-nigh), is a small village on the edge of Isle of Wight County, abutting the Blackwater River that serves as a boundary with Southampton County to the north and west.

The Zuni Indians, who were inhabitants of the deserts of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah, are said to be descendants of the Ancient Pueblo Peoples. In fact is has been shown that they may have lived in in this area for over 1,300 years. That is quite extensive.

The Zuni Indians of New Mexico are experiencing an epidemic of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The Zuni Pueblo created the Zuni Kidney Project (ZKP) to decrease the burden of CKD in the community. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of CKD among Zuni Indians using National Kidney Foundation Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative criteria. The ZKP conducted a population-based, cross-sectional survey to estimate the prevalence of CKD and related risk factors among Zuni Indians aged 20 yr (n = 1113). GFR was estimated using equations based on serum creatinine, and urine albumin:creatinine ratio was calculated in a single spot urine sample. ESRD counts were obtained from health care providers.

The Zuni Indians of New Mexico have been known for their animal carvings (often called fetishes) for over 1,000 years, and their use is as prevalent today as it was in the past. Long prized as powerful religious icons, first by other Indian tribes, and now by non-Indians as well, fetishes have become one of the most popular items in Native American Art today. Zuni Fetishes are not manufactured nor are they produced on demand. Each carving is a handmade work of art.

The Pueblo of Zuni is a federally recognized tribe of North American Indians that occupies a portion of the high plateaus of the American Southwest. It is one of the largest of a related group of tribes known as Pueblos (Eggan 1979), with a population of about 10,000 tribal members (Anyon and Ferguson 1995). Most tribal members live on the Zuni Indian Reservation, encompassing four tracts of trust land with a total area of 655 square miles in western New Mexico and eastern Arizona, as well as some additional fee land not held in trust. The original extent of the Zuni land use system was... much larger, encompassing over 24,000 square mile (Ferguson 1989; Ferguson and Hart 1985). The Zuni have a complex socioreligious structure, one that has brought them a large share of anthropological study during the last century. This structure is one of the most intricate of all the Pueblo tribes and includes 6 kiva groups,12 medicine societies, several priesthoods, and 15 clans (Ladd 1979:482-491).

The Zuni Indians of New Mexico are famous for their handcarved fetishes made from precious stones of the earth. They have been carved and used for hundreds of years. Fetishes are believed to contain a spirit that lives within the fetish and possesses a power to help, protect, and guide its owner. Horse represents partnerships and strength.
