Three Zuni Indians lead. - The trio heads 482-mile marathon through Petaluma. - Running and walking by turns, three Zuni Indians passed through this city shortly after 4 o'clock today in the 482-mile Indian marathon from San Francisco to Grants Pass. They were Chimoney and Sheeka, both representing San Francisco, and Lutei, sponsored by Napa. The trio had covered 38 miles since leaving Sausalita at 11:30 this morning.
The Navajo Indians later introduced the art to the Zuni Indians approximately 125 years ago. After returning to their lands in 1868 following their 4 year internment, the Navajos began to adapt and learn how to silversmith among themselves. In the 1880- 1900, they gradually obtained the tools and sources of silver from various traders and the Fred Harvey Company. From these crude beginnings, the art of making Indian jewelry slowly evolved to the highly polished silver pieces representative of today’s market. Today Indian jewelry is recognized worldwide as a dynamic and exquisite artform indigenous to the culture and heritage of the Indian tribes in the Southwestern United States.

Zuni Pueblo, 1873 Dowa Yalanne was pivotal in the development Zuni settlement patterns as it was the first village in which the whole Zuni population gathered into a single settlement. Although it is unlikely that the other villages were totally abandoned, apparently every Zuni family maintained a residence atop the Dowa Yalanne that could be used for refuge when the Spaniards returned. The mesa top was ... a position defensible against the hostile attacks of the Apaches.
History: The Zuni tribe is said to have originated from a tribe that lived in the same area over 1,000 years prior to the coming of the Europeans. This tribe, the Anasazi, was a large society that encompassed large amounts of land, riches and many distinct cultures and civilizations. The Zuni are thought to be direct descendants of the Anasazi.

The Zuni Kidney Project conducted a population-based, cross-sectional survey to estimate the prevalence of albuminuria, hematuria, and related risk factors. Neighborhood household clusters served as the sampling frame. Participants completed a questionnaire, donated blood and urine samples, and had blood pressure, height, and weight measured. This survey provided the foundation for ongoing studies to identify genetic and environmental risk factors for disease susceptibility and progression.

It was the dominant role of religion in Zuni life that prompted anthropologists and casual visitors alike to cite Zuni as an example of a theocracy ruled by a council of priests. Thus, a German anthropologist, Richard Thurnwald, describes Zuni "as the extreme example of a sacred state, a theocracy ruled by priests who are heads of certain preferred or aristocratic families and who govern through civil authorities appointed by them". (Quoted in Pauker, 1966:196).
