Like the title of her second movie, Almost Famous, 22-year-old actress Zooey Deschanel is on the verge of stardom. Raised in Los Angeles and on film sets around the globe, Deschanel has Hollywood running through her blood. Her father, Caleb, is an Oscar-nominated cinematographer (Being There) and her mother, Mary Jo, is ... an actress (The Right Stuff). Even Deschanel's name has dramatic flair -- she was named after the character in J.D. Salinger's Franny and Zooey. Leading the crop of celebrity offspring to recently hit the big screen -- including Tom Hanks' kid Colin, Robert Redford's daughter Amy, James Caan's son Scott, Sissy Spacek's daughter Schuyler Fisk, not to mention the Kate Hudson and Liv Tyler crowd of a few years past -- Deschanel was groomed for stardom. Zooey Deschanel (pictured inside) has signed on to star opposite Mark Wahlberg in M. Night Shyamalan's natural-disaster actioner The Happening for 20th Century Fox, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Penned by Shyamalan, the story revolves around a family on the run from a natural crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity. With plot details being kept under wraps (although B-D has learned it involves killer trees), the studio would only confirm that Deschanel will play the female lead. Shooting is scheduled to begin in August in Philadelphia.

She sang and acted in Will Ferrell's Elf and was the sympathetic, musical teacher in the recent Bridge to Terabithia. She was aboard a spaceship in the movie made from the sci-fi classic The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and, on December 2nd on the Sci-Fi Channel, she'll take on her most iconic role as the Dorothy equivalent D.G. in the TV mini-series "Tin Man" based upon "The Wizard of Oz".

Turns out, the musical collaboration between singer-songwriter M. Ward and the insanely adorable Zooey Deschanel isn't just a one-time thing. In an interview with the LA radio station KCRW, Deschanel said the two have recorded a full-length album coming out in March.
