There’s just something about Zooey Deschanel that’s oddly appealing. She’s unconventionally attractive, but not nearly as off-putting as a Maggie Gyllenhaal. And while she was certainly cute in The Hitchhiker’s Guide adaptation, she’s not exactly what you’d call traditional leading lady material.

Deschanel played a department store elf opposite Will Ferrell in the comedy Elf (2003), and a lead role in the 2004 film Eulogy. Later that year, she worked again with Ferrell, starring opposite Ed Harris in the dark, off-beat dramedy Winter Passing. She ... starred as Trillian "a rather nicely descended ape-person," in the movie adaptation of Douglas Adams's science fiction series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005). Recently, she appeared as Sarah Jessica Parker's neurotic roommate in Failure to Launch (2006). She has also appeared as Ms. Edmunds in Bridge to Terabithia (2007). Deschanel was also costar to voice Lani Aliikai in the recent penguin hit Surf's Up (2007).

Inspired by his hero, the legendary wave rider Big Z, Cody Maverick leaves his family and his town of Shiverpool, Antarctica to travel to Pen Gu Island for the Big Z Memorial Surf Off -- Cody's first pro competition. Cody believes that winning will bring him the admiration and respect he deserves. But when he unexpectedly comes face to face with Geek, a washed up old surfer, Cody begins to understand that the greatest champion isn't always the one who comes in first.

In March 2007, Deschanel contributed vocals to two songs ("Slowly" and "Ask Her To Dance") on the album Nighttiming by Jason Schwartzman's band Coconut Records. In May 2007, singer-songwriter M. Ward, who had previously performed with Deschanel onstage, said that he was "just finishing work" on her debut album,[9] which will feature songs written by Deschanel and produced by Ward. In January 2008, Rolling Stone reported that Deschanel and Ward were recording under the moniker She and Him, and that the album, titled Volume One, would be released by Merge Records on March 18, 2008.[10][11]

In Winter Passing, a sullen New York actress (Zooey Deschanel) returns home to visit her washed up novelist father (Ed Harris) in Michigan. She's been offered a large sum of money by a book editor (Amy Madigan) to get the love letters shared between the actresses' late novelist mother and her dad. Will Ferrell plays against type as a shy man who handles Harris' domestic matters.
