The Zone diet ... has assisted many in improving general health (not just weight loss). Due to the levels of proteins, it is possible to gain muscle on this diet (but only with the right weights and exercise training). However be warned that the calorie recommendations may be too low for an active person.

In the early 1990s, Hays began shifting some of his obese patients from an Ornish-like diet to one similar to that recommended by Barry Sears of Zone Diet fame - high protein and moderate carb. Next, he began experimenting with an Atkins-like approach - high fat/high protein, extremely low carb.
The American Heart Association (AHA) classifies the Zone as a high-protein diet and has issued an official recommendation warning against such programs. The AHA statement says high-protein diets have not been proven effective for long-term weight loss and could actually be hazardous to health because they restrict intake of essential vitamins and minerals . On the other hand, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) rates The Zone more moderately and suggests that it is closer to dieticians' recommendations than some other high-protein diets.

Some dieticians heartily endorse the Zone, while others dismiss it as being too difficult to follow. The diet can ... be costly, because of its heavy reliance on protein products. In addition, some critics see the Zone as being too complex, forcing dieters to spend too much time trying to do various calculations.
