Theodor, early leading spokesperson for Zionism, was Austro-Hungarian. When he was a kid in college Theodor belonged to a fraternity whose motto was “Honor, Freedom, Fatherland”. The Fatherland in question was Germany. And then? He got a job as a journalist and but ... wrote some stuff for the Viennese stage. A little comedy.

The idea of Zionism is the rebuilding of the Jewish homeland in Palestine, which fell to the Roman Empire in A.D. 70. When the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, the Jews were driven out of their country, but they never gave up hope that their homeland would be restored to the descendants of those who were forced into the diaspora (scattering).

During the Cold War, the spectre of Zionism raised fears of internal dissent and opposition. The Soviet government liquidated almost all remaining Jewish organizations, and placed synagogues under police surveillance, both openly and through the use of informers. Zionism derives its strength from the clear mandate of history. Sixty years ago, the Nazis attempted to obliterate any remnant of Judaism. This event was to be the culmination of two thousand years of Jewish exile and persecution. But the will of evil men did not prevail, and their vision did not come to fruition.
