Zionism: Arab Palestinians
built 655 days ago
Far from freeing Jews from the dangers of antisemitism, Zionism has expanded Jews' traditional role into the international sphere. Many Arab governments use Israel as a scapegoat to draw popular resentment away from their own role in imperialism, capitalism, and repression. Far from giving Jews a "normal" nation-state, Zionism has created a state that is heavily militarized, perpetually at war, and massively dependent on foreign subsidies.

Many critics of Zionism accept culturally based nationalismindeed, most Palestinians enthusiastically embrace itbut they challenge Zionism on the grounds that it is morally different from other forms of cultural nationalism for at least three reasons. First, Jewish nationalism is unacceptable because Jews are not a people; that is, there is no distinctly Jewish culture or way of life, ora more moderate claimthere is no Jewish culture sufficiently distinct to justify national self-determination. Second, Jewish nationalism is unacceptable because its criteria for membership are overly exclusive. Third, Zionism is unacceptable because Jews lacked a necessary ingredient for national self-determination, a contiguous territory on which they were already residing.

How can Zionism (the establishment of a home for Jews) be racist. Isn't Saudi Arabia a home for Arabs, China a home for Chinese? So, why would the existence of a country for the race of Jews be racist?

Without America's support, financial and diplomatic, Zionism could not succeed. The rest of the world, especially the Arabs, know this and are today holding America and Americans accountable. The many attacks on American interests, including that of September 11th, are manifestations of it.

British support for Zionism was always controversial and the issue was periodically debated in Parliament. Following the Arab riots in 1922, Colonial Secretary Winston Churchill decided to remove the Transjordan area of Palestine and use it to fulfill British promises to Sharif Hussein, making one of his sons King of Transjordan.

The vast majority of these house demolitions, 95 percent, have nothing whatever to do with fighting terrorism, but are designed specifically to displace non-Jews and assure the advance of Zionism. In Jerusalem, from the beginning of the occupation of the eastern sector of the city in 1967, Israeli authorities have designed zoning plans specifically to prevent the growth of the Palestinian population. Maintaining the "Jewish character" of the city at the level existing in 1967 (71 percent Jewish, 29 percent Palestinian) required that Israel draw zoning boundaries to prevent Palestinian expansion beyond existing neighborhoods, expropriate Palestinian-owned lands, confiscate the Jerusalem residency permits of any Palestinian who cannot prove that Jerusalem is his "center of life," limit city services to Palestinian areas, limit development in Palestinian neighborhoods, refuse to issue residential building permits to Palestinians, and demolish Palestinian homes that are built without permits. None of these strictures is imposed on Jews. According to ICAHD, the housing shortage in Palestinian neighborhoods in Jerusalem is approximately 25,000 units, and 2,000 demolition orders are pending.
