Zeus was a god of two extremes, his punishments were extremely severe, but his rewards were extremely generous. Two of the most famous (unfortunate) of his victims were Prometheus, one of the demi-gods, and Ixion the king of Lapithae in Thessaly.

The many names of Zeus indicate which force of nature was considered to be the most important in Ancient Greece - Rain. In quite a few other mythologies the reigning deity was usually a Sun God, but in Greece the climate is hot and dry making rain the scarce, life-giving force.

Juturna became a goddess of lakes and rivers in return for the maidenhood Zeus ravished. But the naiad Lara... called Tacita, who could not hold her tongue, reported to Hera that Zeus loved Juturna. For this, Zeus wrenched from her the indiscreet tongue, and told Hermes to take her to Hades as she was to become an infernal nymph.
