Zero Wing, a side-scrolling shoot 'em up, was developed for the arcade by Toaplan in 1989. In 1991/2, the game was ported to the SEGA Megadrive (Genesis), to be released in the UK and South America. Due to Toaplan's lack of cash and resources, the game was poorly translated. The whole thing exploaded into a huge fad in late 2000, early 2001, and the rest is history.
