One of the world's leading ethical pharmaceutical firms, its research and development efforts focused on providing treatment for a wide variety of cancers and disorders of the respiratory, cardiovascular, and central nervous systems. Casodex, an oral prostate cancer drug, Arimidex, for use by breast cancer patients, as well as Zoladex, were some of the most successful treatments developed by the company during this time. Two of the most promising drug therapies to come out of Zeneca in 1995 included Tomudex, the first cell-killing agent for advanced stages of colorectal cancer developed in nearly 30 years, and Accolate, an anti-asthma tablet developed to prevent asthma attacks. Zeneca Pharmaceuticals and the company's European marketing partner, Hoffman-LaRoche, have developed print and television ads that encourage women to find out more about how they can "prevent" breast cancer. These ads have been made possible by the FDA's relaxation of restrictions against direct marketing of pharmaceuticals. They are the first salvo in what will almost certainly soon be a major campaign to get healthy women to buy drugs that have potentially life-threatening side-effects.

Sir Thomas (Tom) McKillop presided over the 1999 merger of Zeneca Group—formerly ICI Pharmaceuticals—with Astra of Sweden, forming the new London-based company AstraZeneca, at the time the fifth-largest drug manufacturer in the world. McKillop began his career as a research scientist but eventually rose through the ranks to management positions. Although the names changed and the businesses he worked for went through considerable development, McKillop was one of those rare individuals in the modern corporate world who stayed with the same company for more than 30 years.

After an excellent lunch provided by Zeneca Pharmaceuticals the afternoon session continued under the chairmanship of John Lindon. He introduced the first speaker, Dr Alastair Swanson (Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Sandwich, Kent, UK) who gave an exposition of the problems associated with HPLC-NMR-MS and the solutions which his group have evolved. This talk provided much practical and useful expertise that should be of widespread use to other practitioners of HPLC-NMR. The next speaker was John Shockcor (Dupont Pharmaceuticals, Newark, Delaware, USA) who showed applications of HPLC-NMR-MS in drug metabolism both for determining the metabolic profile of development drugs but ... for investigating drug metabolite reactivity, in particular the reaction of drug metabolites with glutathione. The afternoon continued with Dr Klaus Pusecker (Novartis Pharma, Basel, Switzerland) who described his studies carried out at the University of Tubingen, Germany on developing miniaturisation of separations coupled to NMR spectroscopy. He showed the system developed for CE-NMR, CEC-NMR and capillary HPLC-NMR, illustrating the methods with results from the separation of natural products and drug metabolites.
