The first large Allied aerial attack on Zara was carried out on November 2, 1943 by the USAAF 12th Air Force, during which an orphanage was destroyed, among other buildings. Larger attacks followed on November 28 in which 200 people were killed, and on December 16 and December 30. The first attacks caused many civilian casualties, but the city continued to function despite the damage. The attack on the 16th was especially harsh, as the shelters at Cereria (now Voštarnica) and at the city's centre were hit, killing between 150 and 200 people. Fifty American B-25 medium bombers participated in the strikes, dropping 90 tonnes of bombs.

Zara was introduced to the world of horses by her mother, pretty much as soon as she left the hospital. On the way home, Anne ordered her driver to take a detour to the stables so she could check on her other babies (the royal car picked up three speeding fines on the way). That day, little Zara got her first chance to ride a horse. She immediately fell off and landed on her head, to much laughter from her mother. "That'll teach her," she was heard to remark.

In 2003, Zara and the HRH The Princess Royal took part in the first UK double ship-naming ceremony in Southampton. HRH The Princess Royal named the P&O Cruises liner Oceana and Zara named its sister ship Adonia.

At the age of ten, during her early years at school, Zara had to endure her parents' rather public divorce. As the media turned its attention toward Princess Anne, Zara realized the obsession many had with her family and became attuned to the media's presence in her life. Despite this, she started to show her rebellious side and was once caught in the boy's dormitory at one of the famed schools she was attending, which of course, was against the rules.

In June 2003 Zara secured a sponsorship deal with Cantor Index - the first royal to accept a commercial deal - which helped her Three Day Eventing career to flourish. In 2005, at Blenheim Palace, she emulated her mother by winning the individual European Eventing Championship title and went on to become World Eventing Champion in 2006.

In addition to winning the rugby world cup, Zara has always been an amazing athlete in her own right and excelled at hockey while at school. Observers were amazed at how frequently she managed to trick opposing goalkeepers into diving the wrong way, often before she took a shot. However, it was always going to be equestrianism that took precedence over all other sports. She won all the prizes available at school level. This was partly because she had her own horse, while all the poor kids went around the course on foot, making sound effects with coconut shells as they went. But her amazing riding ability was the main factor in her early achievements.
