Zach Johnson is one of the hottest up-and-coming golfers on the PGA TOUR. He shocked the golf world when he held off Tiger Woods to win the 2007 Masters. The humble Iowan rode that confidence to another victory this year at the AT&T Classic, the third victory of his career. Johnson is currently enjoying his best year ever on tour, which says a lot for a guy who won once, made the TOUR Championship his rookie year, and has gone on to finish in the top 40 every year since. In 19 starts this season, he has two wins and four top tens and has earned nearly $3.2 million, placing him seventh on the PGA TOUR money list. He earned the nickname “Back-to-Back-to-Back-Zach” when he won the final three regular-season Hooters Tour events in 2001.

And predictably, he thanked his coaches. Less expected was his shout out to his tour chaplain and to God.

Zach Johnson shot a final round 3-under-par 69 yesterday to win the 71st Masters by two strokes. He defeated Retief Goosen, Rory Sabbatini and Tiger Woods, who had the lead early Sunday but was simply outperformed by Johnson down the stretch. Before yesterday, Woods had never lost a major when holding the lead on a Sunday …

Zach Johnson was born in Iowa City, Iowa and raised in nearby Cedar Rapids. He sowed his golfing oats at Elmcrest Country Club and played college golf at nearby Drake University. Johnson turned professional in 1998 and started out playing the mini-tour circuits. In 2001, he won the final three regular-season tournaments on the NGA Hooters Tour, registering his first blip on the professional radar screen.
Through the first seven games of the season Kelly Walsh quarterback Zach Johnson was content to hand the ball off to running backs Erik Heiss and Joe Munsell. And for good reason. » Full text »
