Tanager Place is the third Cedar Rapids charity to be designated by Johnson and his wife, Kim, as annual recipient of proceeds through the Birdies That Care program. Previous recipients were the Madge Phillips Center at Waypoint and the Community Health Free Clinic.

After rolling in a 42-foot putt for a birdie on No. 1, Johnson made three straight birdies to move within one shot of the leaders at the 10th. He stayed 13 under before a birdie at No. 15 forced a two-way tie.

The best chance to catch Johnson belonged to Justin Rose, who made five birdies in a nine-hole stretch through the 16th and was one shot behind until hitting his tee shot into the trees on No. 17 and taking double bogey. Rose finished with a 73 and tied for fifth at 292 with Jerry Kelly (70).

Johnson ended Friday's round with a flourish, sending a 153-yard approach within a few feet of the cup to set up a birdie on the par-4 18th. But overall, this was not a good performance after he had taken two weeks off.

Johnson made par from just off the green, then holed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 16th to cap his run and put Woods in position of needing a charge of his own. Woods simply didn't have it.
