Zach Johnson: Augusta National
built 630 days ago
Johnson (who got little fantasy attention at Augusta) may have caught lightning in a bottle, but it’s shown him he can win on a tough course against the best. If he plays at Quail Hollow the way he played in the Masters, he’ll be right there. The big question ... is "if," as he’s played the Wachovia three years in a row and missed the cut all three times. This course may not be right for him, and that’s why he’s a long shot this week. But Johnson has broken through this year and if he can break that missed-cut streak and contend here, fantasy managers are sure to start playing him more often.

If this was a superb day for Johnson, it was a good one for Augusta National, too. After three days of attritional golf, battle-weary players and galleries numbed into silence by the cold winds and short supply of genius shot-making, yesterday delivered a late supply of much that had been missing, a slew of birdies and eagles and an extraordinary finish when it seemed that any one of six players could pull out of the pack and claim the title.

"I think I'm mentally tough," said Johnson, who entered the tournament ranked 56th in the world. "I don't hit it very far, I don't overpower a golf course, but I think I'm a pretty decent putter. At Augusta National, putting is premium."
