It's official: Zac Efron has committed himself to a new romantic relationship. This time, it's his first leading-man role in New Line's fast-tracked love story, Seventeen. Capitalizing on the back-to-back successes of the big-screen musical Hairspray and small-screen sensation High School Musical, Efron finalized negotiations yesterday to headline the Big-like dramedy in which a 36-year-old man, in need of a major life do-over, wakes up in the body of a studly high school senior (Efron). Efron had been in talks to make the film since February. The role reunites the HSM heartthrob with his Hairspray director, Adam Shankman, who is producing (but not helming) along with his sister, Jennifer Gibgot. ''It's a very multilayered role, which is what attracted Zac to this idea,'' says Gibgot, who has been working with Efron to shape the role that could expand Efron's fanbase beyond the screaming tween crowd.

Zac Efron at the premiere of Hairspray. July 12, 2007 - Zac Efron appears to be the new go-to guy when it comes to movie musicals. After breaking through in High School Musical, Efron took on New Line's remake of the John Waters movie, Hairspray. High School Musical 2 soon followed. Now comes word that Efron will take over the role Kevin Bacon made famous in the 1984 film, Footloose.
Actor Zac Efron's career began when he was just 11 years old, and his parents took note of his tremendous singing talent. They let him audition for a production of Gypsy, and he won a small roll. The show would run for 90 performances, and Efron took to the stage like a fish to water. He graduated to larger roles in other plays like Auntie Mame, The Music Man, and Little Shop of Horrors, before eventually making the transition to TV. Before long, he'd scored a recurring role on the hit series Summerland in 2004. This would seem like his big break, but an even bigger role would come the next year, in the hugely popular Disney feature High School Musical.
