De Carlo was born Peggy Yvonne Middleton in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1922, according to the AP. She emerged as a star, after a series of bit parts, in 1945's Salome - Where She Danced. She spoke about her entrance, as quoted by the AP, "I came through these beaded curtains, wearing a Japanese kimono and a Japanese headpiece, and then performed a Siamese dance. Nobody seemed to know quite why."

Over the years, De Carlo augmented her stardom by shrewd use of publicity. Gossip columnists reported her dates with famous men. In her 1987 book, "Yvonne: An Autobiography," she listed 22 of her lovers, who included Howard Hughes, Burt Lancaster, Robert Stack, Robert Taylor, Billy Wilder, Aly Khan and an Iranian prince.

En 1956, elle campe l'envoûtante Sephora, la femme de Moïse (Charlton Heston) dans Les Dix Commandements de Cecil B. DeMille. Le triomphe du film hisse la comédienne au rang de star. Elle prend alors la décision de multiplier ses activités. Sans négliger le cinéma, elle monte sur les scènes de Broadway pour des comédies musicales et se produit à la télévision. Mariée au cascadeur Robert Morgan, elle choisira de mettre sa carrière en suspens pendant quelques mois pour s'occuper de son époux après le grave accident dont il est victime sur le tournage de La Conquête de l'ouest (1962).

The film that launched De Carlo into stardom was Salome, Where She Danced (1945), an unintentionally ridiculous saga of a Mata-Hari-type Viennese dancer who has an opera house built for her and a town named after her in the American west. De Carlo's foreign-sounding name seemed just right for an actor who went on to appear in such films as Song of Sheherazade, Slave Girl, Casbah and The Desert Hawk. Peggy Middleton, her real name, would never have done.
