Yom Kippur: Sins
built 197 days ago
Although Yom Kippur is solemn and is regarded as a day of judgment, it is not mournful in character because it offers an opportunity for forgiveness for sins against God. In the case of sins committed against individuals, one must first ask forgiveness from the person who has been wronged. It is ... the day on which an individual’s fate for the ensuing year is thought to be sealed. Those who find repentance during Yom Kippur look forward to a joyful year of health and happiness.

The final service of Yom Kippur is the Neilah. One final plea is made to God to forgive the sins of his people, and grant life for the coming year. The service closes with one final blast on the Shofar, so the High Holy Days end just they began.

Yom Kippur atones only for sins between man and G-d, not for sins against another person. To atone for sins against another person, you must first seek reconciliation with that person, righting the wrongs you committed against them if possible. That must all be done before Yom Kippur.

Yom Kippur Yom Kippur is ... a Holiday (Yom Tov). According to tradition, Yom Kippur is the day on which Moses descended from Mt. Sinai with the second Tablets of Stone, forty days after the collective sin of the Golden Calf. This time he was greeted with joy.
The majority of Yom Kippur is spent in the synagogue, where special services are conducted from morning to evening. Especially in Orthodox synagogues, it is customary to wear white on Yom Kippur to symbolize purity before God and the forgiveness of sins. Some wear the kittel, the white robe in which the dead are buried.
On Yom Kippur these 10 days of reprieve ends and the Book of Life is closed and sealed. Those who have repented for their sins are granted a good and happy New Year.
