Yom Kippur: Holy Temple
built 233 days ago
Yom Kippur is of course the ultimate day of teshuva. (Rambam , Tshuva 2,6). Sukkot on the other hand is described by Rambam at the end of Hilchot Lulav as the holiday of simcha yitara, extra happiness. In this context he describes the celebrations of the Simchat Beit HaShoava which took place in the Temple on Sukkot. (Zman Simchatanu). How do the two chagim interface?

Kapparah, the root of Yom Kippur, means cleansing — catharsis, if you like. It’s what’s done to the Temple after it is defiled, getting into the muck and grime and scrubbing it away. You’re not meant to feel good, or have an “easy fast.” Rather, you can use the body’s duress to get into the dirty stuff, whatever that may be for you, so that it can be let go. So, may you have a difficult Yom Kippur — one of searching, discovery and release.

Fasting One who is thirteen and a day (bar or bat mitzvah) is obligated to fast on Yom Kippur. This means a complete abstention of all food and drink from sunset on the eve of Yom Kippur until three stars appear in the sky at the end of Yom Kippur and Havdalah (the ceremony of separation from holy time) is recited. Children are not permitted to fast because it might be dangerous to their health, but older children who are approaching 13 are trained to fast by skipping one meal, or snacks, during the day. Those whose health depends upon medicine which must be taken with food, and elderly people who are weak, or anyone who is sick and needs food to maintain their health, is forbidden from fasting and required to eat.

Students could make a class book or display comparing ordinary daily activities with those of Yom Kippur. The Yom Kippur timeline gives an outline of the different parts of the day and when they occur. If possible, invite a representative from the local Jewish community into the school to talk about activities on this and other Jewish holy days.
