Yom Kippur: Atonements
built 183 days ago
Yom Kippur is the most somber of all the Jewish holidays. It is called the Day of Atonement, on which Jews ask Yahweh for forgiveness for all of their sins of the past year. Yom Kippur occurs on the 10th day of Tishri, the seventh month of the Jewish calendar. On the Western Calendar for 2007, this is October 1.
Yom Kippur, pronounced YOHM kih POOR, is the Jewish day of atonement and the most important and sacred Jewish holy day. It falls in September or October, in the Jewish month of Tishri. It lasts from sunset on the ninth day of Tishri until three stars appear after the tenth day.
Yom Kippur means the Day of Atonement. (Luke 18:15, Acts 27:9, Exodus 30:10, Hebrews 9:24-28, Hebrews 10:19, Romans 2:28,29, 1Peter 1:19, 1John1:7) Yom Kippur involves abstinence from labor, fasting, penitence and sacrifice for sin. This day marked the only entry of the high priest into the Holy of Holies. (Leviticus 16:8-26) The second of two goats for which lots were cast on the Day of Atonement was known as the scapegoat. The first was sacrificed as a sin offering, but the second had the people's sins transferred to it by prayer and was then taken into the wilderness and released. The first goat was killed and it's blood was sprinkled within the veil in the Holy of Holies upon and before the mercy seat.

Yom Kippur is so important to the Jews that it is sometimes referred to as "the Sabbath of Sabbaths" and is the only fast day that can fall on Saturday (the Jewish Sabbath). The day is spent in Synagogue praying and supplicating to God to be sealed in the book of Life. Yom Kippur is not a sad day; it is a day of reflection and atonement. Fasting is used not as a punishment, but as a cleansing of the body as well as the spirit.

"Yom Kippur" means "Day of Atonement". Appropriately, people set aside this day to atone for sins they have committed. It is a day of prayer, fasting, and a time to attend the synagogue. Jewish people will ... not work on this day, one of the most important days in the Jewish calendar. During Yom Kippur, people seek forgiveness from God, and seek to give and receive forgiveness and reconciliation with others.
