More properly called a coverlet than a quilt, the Yo-yo quilt is none the less a fun way to use up scraps. Made from gathered circles of fabric which are then whipstitched together into the top, the yo-yo's go together relatively quickly and easily.

Around 1800, the yo-yo moved into Europe from the Orient. The British called the yo-yo the bandalore, quiz or the Prince of Wales toy. The French used the name incroyable or l'emigrette. The word yo-yo is a Tagalog word, the native language of the Philippines, and means 'come back.' In the Philippines, the yo-yo was a weapon for over 400 hundred years. Their version was large with sharp edges and studs and attached to thick twenty-foot ropes for flinging at enemies or prey. People in the United States started playing with the British bandalore or yo-yo in the 1860s.
The first yo-yos manufactured in the United States were carved out of solid blocks of maple. This was a time-intensive but straight forward process. Lumber was first dried in huge kilns. This step is critical in the making of a wooden yo-yo because wood warps and shrinks as it dries, which is something that should happen before it is carved into the specific, balanced shape of a yo-yo. Once dried, the lumber was cut down to size. It was then put on a lathe and, using a master pattern to ensure the correct dimensions, it was shaved with a variety of chisels into a yo-yo.

Click to visit FIRST During the 1950s, Duncan introduced the first plastic yo-yos and the Butterfly® shaped yo-yo, which is much easier to land on the string for complex tricks. The biggest yo-yo boom in history hit in 1962, following the innovative use of TV advertising. Financial losses at the end of the boom, and a costly lawsuit to protect the yo-yo trademark from competitors forced the Duncan family out of business in the late 60s. Flambeau Products, who made Duncan’s plastic models, bought the company and still owns it today.
