Yo: String

In 1990, Tom Kuhn released the SB-2 yo-yo (short for Silver Bullet 2), a high-performance ball bearing transaxle made with aluminum. This marked a major breakthrough for the modern yo-yo, as it was the first ball bearing yo-yo that actually worked. This ensured extremely long spin times and the ability to return as well. This yo-yo, (along with his many other accomplishments in the yo-yo world), eventually brought him the title "Father of the modern yo-yo", receiving the "Donald F. Duncan Family Award for Industry Excellence" in 1998. He was the first to receive this award.

The European introduction to the yo-yo occurred much more recently. The toy arrived in France during the eighteenth century, probably brought by missionaries returning from China, and it became a craze among the elite. The future king at that time, Louis XVII, was painted at age four with a yo-yo in hand. The French called the toy l'emigrette, after the aristocrats who popularized the toy and who were forced to emigrate to safer territories when the revolution began.

A search of the lyrics from several thousand rap songs at Web sites such as http://lyrics.astraweb.com, which produced 35,100 instances of yo, turned up no songs with third-person pronominal yo. In an attempt to determine whether the pronoun is being widely used beyond the Baltimore area, the authors contacted a number of teachers in other cities (Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Dayton, New York, San Jose, and Long Beach, California) to see if they had heard the form used. The teachers who responded indicated that they had heard yo used as a greeting or as an attention-focusing device, but not as a pronoun. A teacher in Milwaukee indicated that she had heard yo used as a pronoun but very seldom and was able to provide a few examples similar to the ones we had collected in Baltimore; 54 students at the school completed 2 cartoons each, with no instances of pronominal yo being used (and only one instance of attention-getting yo). Fifty of them ... completed the task in appendix C, with no student-written conversations containing yo.

The Duncan Pulse yo-yo is a color-changing lighted yo-yo unlike any other yo-yo. Two LEDs light up as the yo-yo spins, producing a whirling display of colors in the dark. The body of the yo-yo is a lightweight clear modified Imperial shape (very good for looping), with a high speed ball bearing axle, and friction stickers for perfect response. With its long spin times, this yo-yo is great for wrap style tricks. Uses two L1121 button cels (included, plus two extra batteries!) Small parts - not for children under 3 years.

With the exception of the Brain, the string can be difficult for beginners to wind, especially with transaxle and roller bearing yo-yos. An easy way to wind your yo-yo is to place your index finger over the string gap and wind the string once over your finger. Next wind the string twice more around, this time under your finger and inside the string gap. Now slip your finger out and finish winding your yo-yo.
