Yggdrasil: World Tree
built 654 days ago
According to Norse legend, Yggdrasil is where the god Odin hung upside-down for nine nights in order to obtain the Rune Alphabet. Beneath the roots of the World Ash lies the spring, Mimir, to which Odin sacrificed an eye to gain wisdom.
In the continuities it appears in, although always presented as being very mysterious and powerful, Yggdrasil is the master computer that controls the Digital World, the otherworldly realm home to all Digimon. Due to this position of power, it is always presented as the "god" of the Digital World, overseeing its survival and, in some cases, destruction.
The Yggdrasil subsector contains 22 worlds with a total population of 14.221 billion. The highest population is 9, at Garnl and Floria; the highest tech level is F, at Floria and Insec.
Through its roots and branches Yggdrasil was connected with all the principal divisions of the world; it was ... connected, symbolically, to the past through the wise Mimir and to the future through the Norns. It magically conferred knowledge as well: according to one myth, Odin hanged himself from Yggdrasil in order that the sacred runic secrets would be revealed to him.
This tree from the Viking Age Överhogdal tapestries is believed to show Yggdrasil with Viðópnir. Two of Blizzard's games, there are numerous things which reference Yggdrasil. In the Warcraft fantasy universe, there are two large trees which may reference Yggdrasil. The first, Nordrassil, appears in Warcraft III where it is ... known as the "World Tree" and is central to the Night Elves. After its destruction in that game, a second "World Tree" is made, known as Teldrassil and appearing in World of Warcraft as an island wherein the playable landmass is high in the boughs of the tree. In the Starcraft games, there is a Zerg Overlord named Yggdrasill. This overlord is far more powerful than the ordinary units created in-game.
The statistics above are applicable only when Yggdrasil is awake, which as a rule, is never. Perhaps at the end of the world she will awaken, or partially awaken. Or perhaps she will slumber on regardless, until the next world is born.
