Kafelnikov is the hardest worker in tennis. He played 150 matches last year – 27 more than his nearest rival, Pat Rafter, and 68 more than top-ranked Pete Sampras, in 10th place. He has played more matches than anyone on the tour for four of the past five years.

The only real drama at the end was whether Kafelnikov would surpass Pioline's (lack of) effort in 1999. That, and when Hewitt would formally close the deal. On match point, after hitting what he thought was an ace, Hewitt started celebrating -- only to be told by the chair umpire that his serve had grazed the net cord.

Kucera made all the important points and hindered Kafelnikov, who has won the GWO three times, to be a part of the match. Kucera, who had been troubled with injuries and never tied up to his former level, played as in his best year 1998.
