The Yazoo land fraud was one of the most significant events in the post-Revolutionary history of Georgia. The bizarre climax to a decade of frenzied speculation in the state's public lands, the Yazoo sale of 1795 did much to shape Georgia politics and to strain relations with the federal government for a generation.

Closely followed by the more abrasive single 'Don't Go' with its beautifully melancholy b-side 'Winter Kills' Yazoo had proved to be an astoundingly popular proposition. They effortlessly combined Vince's technical precision with the range and power of Alison's vocal delivery, mixing deep soul tragedy in with innate pop sensibilities. At once, it was decided these two were "mavericks", a label they always seemed very uneasy with. "The only level on which I can take the group seriously is on a musical one," stated Moyet in July '82, when 'Don't Go' in the UK and the US remix of 'Situation' were making big news of Yazoo on both sides of the Atlantic. "Sometimes I think that people don't quite know how to take me," she added. "A lot of people think that girls in groups should be real pin-ups.

During the Yazoo Land Fraud, James Gunn, Mathew M'Allister, George Walker, Zachariah Cox, Jacob Walburger, William Longstreet and Wade Hampton, by deed, convey a portion of the Georgia Company's land to James Greenleaf. Greenleaf's later sale of the land results in the landmark U. S. Supreme Court ruling, Fletcher v. Peck.

In 1794 four new Yazoo companies, the Georgia Company, the Georgia-Mississippi Company, the Upper Mississippi Company, and the Tennessee Company bribed and intimidated a bill through the assembly that sold them more than twice the amount of land for $500,000. It passed the house 19 to 9 on January 2, 1795, and the Senate 10 to 8 the following day and was signed into law by Governor Mathews on January 7, 1795. A bid of $800,000 with a $40,000 deposit in hard money by the Georgia Union Company was ignored. U. S. Senator James Gunn was a major stockholder in the companies, as were a number of Georgia legislators.
