Yaoi is a term for a publishing genre which originated in Japan and often encompasses manga, doujinshi (self-published comics), anime, or fan art. It focuses on homosexual relationships between male characters and is generally sexually explicit. Some in the West consider yaoi to be synonymous with shōnen-ai or “Boy Love”, which focuses on similar themes... shōnen-ai is defined as not containing the sexually explicit material usually found in yaoi.

Yaoi-Con is an annual event by fans, for fans focusing on yaoi or boys love manga, anime, artwork and games. This 3-day event attracts a largely female adult audience from North America and beyond. Because of the explicit sexual content in some yaoi manga and anime available at this event, attendees must be 18 years or older.

Yaoi Daily is a sizable community with a fair number of posts each day. Considering the diversity of yaoi manga, doujinshi, and art, organization helps visitors find and view what appeals to them. Additionally, specific rules prevent conflicts and disagreements that may arise and disrupt the community as a whole.

Yaoi has not escaped censorship. Sharon Kinsella describes a moral panic in Japan in 1989 which resulted in the police arresting about 80 people, almost all teens or in their twenties, and confiscating thousands of dōjinshi from Tokyo stores (1998a). She documents how parents' groups which claimed to be protecting children were in reality fronts for government agencies involved in controlling manga. One such, the Tokyo Mothers' Society, operated out of a police station (2000a:152-155).
