Yaoi (やおい) is a publishing genre which focuses on male/male relationships and is marketed at females. The genre originated in Japan and encompasses manga, anime, novels and dōjinshi. In Japan, this genre is called "Boys' Love" or simply "BL", and "yaoi" as a genre name is mostly used by western fans. Yaoi has spread beyond Japan; yaoi material is available in the United States, as well as other Western and Eastern nations worldwide.
Yaoishianity is a religion born out of Yaoi. Its basic beliefs are that hot, manga-lite Japanese boys are the sons of God, God being Lance Bass. Known practices are reading Mad Magazine, listening to “Mistletoe and Wine” during summer and licking whipped cream off each others nipples. The National Holiday is the 7th of every month and on that day Yaoishians engage in orgies and the watching of Queer As Folk.
If size did matter at Yaoi-Con, Juné must have impressed as it announced a staggering 24 new manga licenses and nine new novels. Digital Manga Publishing’s BL line has seen good growth since its start in 2004 and is now releasing an average of eight books a month for the rest of 2007 and the start of 2008. Tateno Matoko returns to BL with her two-volume series, Steal Moon, a sci-fi romance that features angels, street fighting and some voyeurism. High schoolers find love and maybe make great music in Abe Akane’s Hard Rock. And a title that got a good response at Juné’s panel was Katagiri Barbara’s novel,
Each year Yaoi-Con sponsors at least one Japanese yaoi mangaka as guest of honor. And, as yaoi publishing expands in the U.S., the companies who attend Yaoi-Con have become interested in bringing guests with them. Guests of honor usually participate in question and answer/autograph sessions as well as sketch sessions where they demonstrate to attendees how they produce their work.
Yaoi is one of the best things that has hit the US from Japan. For those not familiar with it, Yaoi is a genre originating in Japan. It had its beginnings in manga, Japanese comics, and in anime. It is very difficult to explain what Yaoi really is, and perhaps only its fans can really appreciate it. Yaoi is about the love between idealized boys. It explores the beauty of these relationships and their development. It is important to point out; ... that Yaoi is very different from the m x m genre of writing.
Yaoi in the West is nowhere as visible as it is in Japan, probably a reason a Choisir-type debate has not happened here, (55) but anime and manga have been attacked. Sailor Moon and Ranma 1/2 were taken off the air in Mexico, accused by a group of Catholic priests and families of promoting homosexuality and satanism. Their respective manga were withdrawn from the market. (56) Sales of the manga Dragonball Z were suspended in Finland after members of Parliament accused it of "promoting pedophilia." (57)
