The New York Yankees , a Major League Baseball team, is one among two major league franchises that maneuver in the City of New York ; the other team is the New York Mets of the National League. The Yankees belong to in the Eastern Division of the American League since 1969. The Yankees have embodied a “dynasty" in professional athletics along with franchises like the Boston Celtics and Montreal Canadiens. The Boston Red Sox are the critical rivals of the Yankees, with the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry often measured as one of the most frenzied rivalries in all of American professional sports. It's been five long seasons that New York Yankees couldn't win a World Series championship. It is a serious matter of concern for the organizations.

In the near future, though, the Yankees should have plenty of homegrown options, both in the rotation and in the bullpen. Their last three drafts have brought in several significant arms, and Philip Hughes is arguably the best pitching prospect in the minors. He probably was ready to help New York in September, but the organization played it safe with its top prospect, who nearly doubled his career high for innings in a season. Hughes and fellow starters Tyler Clippard, Jeff Karstens and Steven White, plus relievers T.J. Beam and J. Brent Cox, should be able to contribute in 2007.

A lively auction, led by Elliott Balbert, founder of Natrol, began with two tickets to a Yankees/Sox game donated by The Ullman Shapiro Ullman law firm. This touched off a flurry of bidding that reached its peak with NBTY and VSI battling it out. NBTY ultimately scored. Next, EuroPharma jumped in with Green Bay Packers tickets, with New Hope and Capsugel splitting the prize after heated bidding. Trish Balbert, a holistic health care practitioner in New York City, donated three months of healthy lifestyle counseling, which set off another round of competitive bidding, ultimately won by Virgo Publishing. The outpouring of support for DSEA included additional donations from Inverness Medical, Herbalife, EuroPharma, Zila, NBTY, The Shelton Group, TABS Media, and many others.

In 2000, the Yankees battled through the post-season, winning the ALDS against the A's after the full five games, and beating the Mariners in the sixth game of the ALCS. This led to a much anticipated meeting with the crosstown rivals and National League Champions, the New York Mets, in the first Subway Series championship since 1956. The Yankees won the first two, but a Mets win in the third game snapped their streak of World Series wins at 14 (from 1996-2000). This beat the club's previous record of 12 (in 1927, 1928, and 1932). A run scored by the Mets off of Mariano snapped his string of 34⅓ consecutive scoreless innings in the playoffs, which broke Whitey Ford's streak, a record he took from Ruth. The team would go on to win the fourth game and then, in the fifth game, Mets star catcher Mike Piazza would hit a long fly ball to deep center in the bottom of the ninth, which would just miss leaving Shea, instead landing in Bernie Williams's glove and completing the Yankees' threepeat.
