The Yangtze River is the longest river of Asia, stretching 6,300 km (3,900 miles) in length from East to West across China. Yangtze River passes through the spectacular Yangtze Gorges, which are noted for their natural beauty. In 1994 Three Gorges Projection began on the Three Gorges Dam near Yichang. The Yangtze River was diverted after four years in November 1997. The first group of generators began to generate power in 2003, and a permanent ship lock is scheduled to open for navigation the same year. The entire project is to be completed by 2009, when all 26 generators will be able to generate power.

The Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia and third longest in the world. The headwaters of the Yangtze are situated at an elevation of about 16,000 feet in the Kunlun Mountains in the southwestern section of Qinghai. It flows generally south through Sichuan into Yuanan then northeast and east across central China through Sichuan, Hubei, Auhui, and Juangsu provinces to its mouth, 3,720 miles, in the East China Sea north of Shanghai. The river has over 700 tributaries but the principal tributaries are the Hun, Yalong, Jialing, Min, Tuo Jiang, and Wu Jiang. The climate ranges from 96 degrees in the summer to cold, brisk temperatures in the winter. Precipitation is high due to the height of the mountains.

Shennong Stream, a tributary of the Yangtze River, rises in the southern part of the Shennongjia Natural Reserve. It joins the Yangtze at Xirangkou in Hubei's Badong County. With crystal clear water, this steam flows swiftly from north to south through deep gorges. A sampan tour will allow you to experience a high speed adventure along this newly opened unspoiled river. An arrow-like sampan glides through the four-kilometer-long Mianzhu Gorge and then enters the main stream of the Shennong.

Traversing eleven provinces of China, the Yangtze River divides China into northern and southern parts. Winding 3,900 miles, it is the largest river in China and the third largest in the world after the Nile in Africa and the Amazon in South America. Originating from the Tanggula Range in Qinghai Province, the Yangtze River flows into the East Sea from Shanghai. Branches of the Yangtze River include Min River, Jialing River, Wu River, Xiang River, Gan River and Huangpu River. In Jiangsu Province, it meets the Grand Canal in Zhenjiang City.

Shibaozhai, Literally means Stone Treasure Fortress, Located in ZhongCounty, at the south bank of the Yangtze River, 278 km away from Chongqing, it was first built in Qing Dynasty in 1750. Shibaozhai is one historic site that will look much different in 2009. When the lake formed by the Three Gorges Dam is completed, most of this bluff will be under water and the temple will sit close to the lake's edge on a newly formed island. The wooden architecture stands on the riverside. It is built by catch upon a rectangular rock with sheer cliffs with a height of 56 meters and 12 stories. And every floor of the wooden structure contains interesting artifacts.

The Yangtze River's "attitude" is in for some adjustment. Already, portions of the river above the partially-completed Three Gorges Dam have been tamed; the remainder, upriver to Chongqing, will be smooth as silk by 2009 when the dam is complete. The taming of the Yangtze has been a dream for centuries. Since recorded history, hundreds of thousands of residents have perished in catastrophic flooding.
