Yahoo Messenger (formerly known as Yahoo Pager) is a free service that allows you to see when friends come online and send them instant messages. It can ... alert you to new e-mail in your Yahoo Mail or Yahoo Personals account, or when you have upcoming events recorded in Yahoo Calendar. Yahoo Messenger offers firewall support, a standby mode that minimizes the program until an Internet connection is made, the ability to save and print your conversations, and a tabbed interface that provides quick access to your favorite stocks, news, and sports scores. Other features include the ability to create a chat room automatically, stock price alerts, the ability to send messages to friends even if they're not online when you are, a Quick Compact mode that hides the Messenger tools to maximize your viewing area, Messenger Themes, the Online Presence, a small HTML "button" you can put onto your Web site to allow your Yahoo buddies to instantly see if you are online, and voice chat, which allows you to talk for free to anybody else on the Internet. If you have a microphone and speakers, you can talk to other people on Yahoo with no long-distance charges. Using a Webcam, you can see who you are chatting with, or view the Webcam of any Yahoo member who has granted you access.

Yahoo now calls version 7.0 of its instant-messaging tool Yahoo Messenger with Voice, playing up this app's ability to double as a Net-based phone service. Yahoo's tool is the second most popular instant messenger behind AIM, whose VoIP-enhanced update remains in a beta test version code-named Triton. No longer are instant messenger programs just for text chat; a host of vendors are building phone capabilities into their IM clients. Yahoo recommends that you reserve 21.3MB on your hard drive to download this program, which has an installation time of 1 minute via broadband but up to 49 minutes if you're dialing up on a 56Kbps modem.

In its second update released this year, Yahoo Messenger has offered an update for patching a vulnerability in its webcam video chat feature. The vulnerability is a virus that will execute malicious code on your computer if you accept a webcam invitation from this party. This vulnerability in Yahoo Messenger’s webcam chat tool was discovered last week. You’ll need to download the latest version in order to get this patch fixed–or just don’t use the video chat feature with malicious people.

Yahoo is planning to take away Yahoo Messenger by August 25th 2001. If you want to keep out Yahoo Messenger free of charge, send this to everyone you know. It will be used as a petition. Each person you send this to counts as a "signature" If this petition gets 1000,000 signatures they will keep Yahoo Messener. If they do not receive 1000,000 votes you will have to pay $10.00 to have Messenger (per month). If you do care about this then please for everyone....
