Xvid

screenshot Xvid is a video codec that provides video compression that drastically reduces the size of video files, while retaining reasonable quality. This download includes the decder and encoder engine. Video files that have been compressed with Xvid are usually distributed with an .AVI extension. Installing the Xvid codec will allow you to play these files in Windows Media Player or any other video players.

Xvid (formerly XviD) is an open source MPEG-4 video codec, implementing MPEG-4 Simple Profile, Advanced Simple Profile, and Advanced Video Coding standards. It is written in C with assembler optimizations for quality and speed (including MMX, SSE, and 3Dnow! code for i386 and AltiVec for PowerPC), and is especially optimized towards offline, multi-pass compression for storage and archival purposes.

According to reports from several security services, the Xvid 1.1.2 Video Codec Library has a security hole which attackers could use to gain control over a PC. For a successful attack, a victim only needs to open a prepared Xvid-AVI file with an application which makes calls to the library. Both Windows and Linux applications are affected.
Extenders for Windows Media Center are ... for the first time, enhanced to allow support for popular video codecs such as DivX and Xvid, along with continued support for Windows Media(R) Video HD files. These extenders will also lead the industry in supporting the ability to send protected HD content to additional rooms, including recorded TV from over-the-air Advanced Television Systems Committee or Cable Card tuners and movies and music available from providers such as CinemaNow, MovieLink LLC and Napster LLC. Extenders also support Media Center features such as Reuters news feeds, National Public Radio broadcasts, up-to-date sports reports from the FOX Sports Lounge, and subscription music from XM Radio. At the same time, these devices support Parental Controls built into Windows Media Center, allowing parents to choose the content their children are allowed to view.
Xvid specifies three warp points for its implementation of global motion compensation as opposed to the single warp point implementation of DivX. Enabling some of the more advanced encoding features can compromise player compatibility. Some issues exist with the custom quantization matrices used in tools such as AutoGK that automate encoding with Xvid. This can (depending on the decoder chipset of the set-top player in question) produce videos that have unstable playback and artifacts. However, most recent model DivX compatible DVD players have improved support for custom quantization matrices.
Due primarily to concerns over patents, the official Xvid homepage does not provide binary versions of the Xvid codec. Video for Windows codecs (and DirectShow decoding-only filters) for Microsoft Windows are... made available at supporting websites. For Linux users, many distributions provide an Xvid codec for use with media players such as MPlayer and VLC. However, all these players use the FFmpeg MPEG-4 decoder by default and therefore don't require (or don't support) decoding with the Xvid codec.
