Xenical® (orlistat 120mg capsules) is a Pharmacist Only Medicine for weight loss/control in adults with an initial BMI ≥ 30. Common side effects: abdominal pain/discomfort, wind, fatty/oily stools, rectal pain/discomfort, urgent need to go to the toilet and low blood glucose. Do not use if you have a low uptake of essential nutrients or problems with bile flow. Ask your pharmacist if Xenical is right for you. Always read the label and use strictly as directed. Do not take Xenical without first talking to your doctor if you have a chronic malabsorption syndrome, or gallbladder problems. You may not be able to take Xenical if you have any of the conditions listed above. Before taking Xenical, talk to your doctor if you have a history of kidney stones, have diabetes, have anorexia or bulimia, take any other weight-loss medicine, or take cyclosporine. You may not be able to take Xenical, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during your treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above. Xenical is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Do not take Xenical without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant.

As with Xenical and most prescription medications it may have side effects. They include loose stools and increased gas or flatulence. These symptoms are generally mild and occur at the beginning of treatment, go away after a short period of time and are particularly experienced after meals containing high levels of fat. Normally, these symptoms disappear if you continue treatment and keep to your recommended diet

For 6 of the Xenical patients, mammograms were available from before Xenical treatment had commenced and in 4 of these 6 it was possible to detect the lesion when the mammogram was re-examined. Most cancers found were 25mm in diameter and, as it takes 8 to 12 years for a cancer to grow from a single cell to 10mm, it is clear that most tumours were pre- existing. A specific marker found in 9 tumours suggests the lesion was at least 5 years old. Of the 12 patients treated with Xenical 120mg, 60mg or 30mg found to have breast cancer, 9 had tumours which were proved to have been pre-existing. Of the 3 patients treated with placebo who were found to have breast cancer, one tumour was proven to have been pre-existing.

Xenical may cause some side effects that are usually mild to moderate and decrease after the first week of the treatment. The most common side effects are fatty/oily stool, oily spotting, intestinal gas with discharge, bowel movement urgency, poor bowel control, or headaches may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Intestinal side effects (e.g., oily stool) may increase in intensity if you exceed your daily dietary fat allowance. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.
