Xcel Energy has volunteered to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement on its plans for the disposal of coal ash produced after 2009 by the A.S. King Electric Generating Plant (King Plant) in Oak Park Heights. Xcel Energy’s preferred alternative is disposal in a new landfill facility in West Lakeland Township, Washington County. The Scoping Environmental Assessment Worksheet (EAW) document was released to the public on August 28, 2006 and the public comment period lasted until October 26, 2006. (Note: Originally, the comment period was to be 30 days. The MPCA agreed up front to make it 45 days in response to requests from LUGs, to accommodate their monthly meeting schedule. The MPCA extended the comment period another 15 days when people told the agency at the public scoping meeting that they had not been on the mailing list and so did not get the SEAW at the beginning of the comment period.
The Xcel Energy Foundation has donated $5,000 to Eastern New Mexico University's Alliance for Minority Participation (AMP) program. The AMP assists individuals from minority groups to finance their higher education. Present at the ceremony in the ENMU president's office on Tuesday were: (L-R) Roy Cahill, manager for Xcel Energy; Dr. Steven Gamble, ENMU president; and Noelle Bartl, ENMU director of development.
