Xbox Games: Microsoft Xbox

One of the downsides of the Xbox games live service is that it is only compatible with a broadband connection - meaning no one on dialup can participate. Even with this limitation, Microsoft claims that as of late 2004 they have signed up over one million users. This fact raises the eyebrows of some people in the gaming industry as public filings show the Xbox division of Microsoft has not made a profit in the first three years of operation. Microsoft tried in vain to add additional features such as music and the ability to play DVD’s. However, it seems the big brass at MS had reconsidered as they will be releasing an Xbox replacement for Christmas in 2005.
A few weeks before the Xbox 360 launch, Microsoft announced which Xbox games would work with the initial Xbox 360 version. You can read much more about this topic in my Xbox 360 Software Compatibility List showcase, but the long and short of it is this: Before any Xbox game will run on Xbox 360, you will need to have a compatible software update. Because these updates can be quite big, you ... need a hard drive in order to play Xbox games on Xbox 360. And if you load a compatible game on Xbox 360 and have Xbox Live enabled, the system will check for new updates at that time as well.
Xbox (http://www.xbox.com/) is Microsoft's future-generation video game system that delivers the most powerful games experiences ever. Xbox empowers game artists by giving them the technology to fulfill their creative visions as never before, creating games that blur the lines between fantasy and reality. Xbox is now available in North America, Japan, Europe and Australia.

The solution Microsoft has reached is apparently to recompiled current-gen Xbox games so that they can be played on the 360. First on the list, it says, are the best-selling Halo titles. The news has raised more questions than it answers... as it suggests that game titles may need to be modified somehow before players can use them on their new consoles - but Microsoft has denied that it will ask players to pay for new versions of the software. "At launch, Xbox 360 will be backward compatible with the top Xbox games," Xbox PR manager Michael Wolf told GamesIndustry.biz today. "Our goal is to have every Xbox game work on Xbox 360. You will NOT need to purchase a new 'version' - your original games will work on Xbox 360."
As the second anniversary of the Xbox 360 approaches, Microsoft has released a list of stats on the console, providing figures on sales of both the 360 and its games, details on Xbox Live, social networking and more. Microsoft says that it has sold more than 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles in the 37 countries where it is currently available; of these, 25 have access to Xbox Live.

The Xbox videogame system was Microsoft’s first foray into the videogame industry. Microsoft had to avoid its PCish look and prove it was serious about his home console. Now that Xbox is an established player in the industry, Microsoft is extending the entertainment capabilities of the Xbox platform by incorporating a vast array of new features related to digital entertainment.
