Both Haas and Malisse played close to textbook tennis in splitting the first two sets. Haas went up a break in the sixth game to win the first set and Malisse got his break in the eighth game of the second set.
After a spell working with David Felgate, former coach of Tim Henman, Malisse recruited new coach Dean Goldfine to his corner, the American who is doubling up his duties with Todd Martin. "Dean is really good," says Malisse. "He knows a lot about the game, he's helping me get back into shape and work on my game."
Malisse, from Belgium, was ranked 851st on the ATP Tour coming into his first tour match. He made the main draw as a wild card after qualifying last weekend. Malisse broke Sampras' serve in the first game, then seized the first set by taking 12 of 13 points in the final three games.
Today, Malisse broke in the third game with a volley winner that left Nalbandian sprawling at the net. But Nalbandian broke back to love in the next game and again in the sixth game. After Nalbandian converted his second break point of that game with a backcourt winner, Malisse bounced his racquet off the ground twice.

Spadea forced Malisse to deuce in the second game — his three points on Malisse’s serve equaled the total Garcia-Lopez won in his entire quarterfinal against the Belgian. But Malisse followed with another down-the-line forehand winner — this one on the dead run — and a 121 mile-per-hour ace.

Malisse, 21, had suffered heart palpitations during Friday's play, twice calling for a trainer. Clutching his chest, Malisse was examined by the trainer and tournament doctor after the fifth game of the match.
