Malisse became the first player to accomplish feat twice in a season since Yevgeny Kafelnikov in 1996. He then injured his wrist on February 19 in Memphis and retired. He was sidelined for almost six months before returning at the US Open in August, but lost to David Nalbandian in the second round.

Malisse, who reached the semifinals in 2002, has a wrist injury which forced him to withdraw from the French Open last month. The Belgian is replaced in the men's singles draw by Lu Yen-hsun of Taiwan.

Chennai: If the first round encounter is anything to go by, Xavier Malisses dodgy wrist has healed. The defending champion, who achieved a rare double here last year, swept aside Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 6-4, 6-3 to move into the second round of the ATP Chennai Open on Monday.
