Xanga Layouts

Nabbr provides a neat little hotlist widget to put on MySpace, Xanga and blogs. The concept is similar to MyPickList, or even the fashion-bookmarking site StyleHive: users can pick their favorite products from certain categories, copy products from their friend’s hotlists or bookmark items while they’re browsing the web. You can explore the content based on the most recent picks, the most popular stuff or the fastest movers. Top picks include DVDs, music and games. Most importantly, you can export your list as a Flash widget to place on your favorite social network.

Some users find the default Xanga interface rather regimented, and something of a sandbox environment. The interface does not parse some HTML code, and default site customization is essentially limited to editing content in pre-defined areas. Xanga users frustrated by this lack of options may decide their needs are better addressed by a site that uses software such as Movable Type or WordPress. Other Xanga users... overcome many of the default limitations through creative use of numerous available skins and layouts.

Odeo has a whole selection of players for MySpace, Xanga and Blogger users - it’s a space they’re targeting heavily. Last month, they launched Hellodeo, a tool for putting webcam videos on your blog or social networking page - at the same time, they rolled out Twitter (formerly Twttr), a text messaging service that includes widgets for your blog. What’s more, they’re testing out Odeo/play, a MySpace-inspired interface for the Odeo site.

A Skin is a CSS stylesheet paired with HTML and Xanga's own language. This is differentiated from the templates used by Classic users, often referred to as "layouts" (but often confused with Premium skins). There is a specific page for adding skins, and some inexperienced users mistake this for the "Custom Header" and "Website Stats" for which Classic users can access. Xanga Skins and Xanga Layouts are not interchangeable. Others have created layout sites for others to access.

Xanga offers multiple ways to navigate its content - you search by username, full name and email address, or search across Metros and Blogrings. For safety reasons, you can opt out of appearing in Xanga search results - in fact, you can prevent any external search engine from indexing your site. You can ... search for posts in individual blogs or search the web using Xanga’s web search (powered by Yahoo).

Xanga currently allows users to use JavaScript to customize their pages. Server side word filtering is used to detect dangerous scripts. It is claimed that the filtering can be bypassed by escaping the filtered text into Unicode and outputting the now scrambled script using JavaScript.
