One potentially annoying aspect of Xanga are the constant reminders to upgrade to the premium account. In fact, new users are automatically upgraded to premium accounts after a few days - the free trial lasts for 20 days, after which you can decide to pay up or revert to the “Classic” account. You can ... award premium to a friend.

Aside from layouts, Xanga users have access to almost unlimited design capabilities. Xanga Classic users can use all HTML properties, excepting only the <META> tag (which Xanga banned in 2004 for being associated with advertisement removal). <META> tags is one of the tags that page transitions can be made from. At the time of the ban, page transitions were at the peak of popularity.

Xanga Metros, which launched in November 2004, is a way to navigate Xanga blogs based on the location of their writers. The areas tend to be fairly large - you can only drill down as far as the major metropolitan areas. The reason is simple: Xanga’s users tend to be young, and disclosing their locations could be a safety hazard.

All Xanga members receive a "Xanga Site", a web site made up of a weblog, a photoblog, a videoblog, an audioblog, a "Pulse" (mini-blog), and a social networking profile. Members ... have the option of joining or making blogrings "groups".

All the media is displayed in a nicely-designed player to embed on MySpace, Xanga, hi5, Tagworld, Piczo, Friendster, Multiply, Windows Live Spaces and hundreds of other social sites. What’s more, users can submit photos by clicking the widget itself. However, you have to be careful: by default, Kindfish allows anyone to submit images to your stream, which would probably result in some offensive content appearing. You can edit these settings under the “Permissions” section. Additionally, it’s probably wise to choose an email address that nobody will guess - sites like Radar create a random address, while Kindfish lets you choose your own.

On June 8, 2006, Xanga launched safety.xanga.com, a site with links to tips for parents, youth, and law enforcement. [24] Links to these safety tips were added to the bottom of every page on Xanga.
