By the sixth season, Xander is beginning to have doubts about his future with Anya. Hoping for a happy ending, he summons the demon Sweet to turn Sunnydale into a living musical, which goes horribly wrong when people start bursting into flames as well as song (cf. "Once More With Feeling"). Xander's fears over marrying Anya are made worse by a visit from a demon pretending to be his future self, showing him a bitter future trapped in a marriage similar to his parents' (cf. "Hell's Bells"). Although the vision is later revealed to be false, Xander admits to having doubts beforehand and leaves a heartbroken Anya at the altar.

Xander smirked at the dust cloud and sensed through it. Cell was regenerating fast. “NO MORE!!!” he raged and flew at Xander and started laying a flurry of blows on him. Xander tried to keep up with this new speed that Cell was finally tapping into. Xander wasn’t capable of keeping up, but he compensated with his skill, for every two blows he landed, Cell got in one .... Realizing he couldn’t keep this up without serious damage, Xander flew higher in the air suddenly. Cell did exactly what Xander wanted, he started firing ki blasts at him, which Xander started sending right back, and adding his own.

Later in high school, Xander is beginning to show signs of nervousness about the issue of his sexuality. He actively denies being gay when Larry suspects him of it in Phases (thanks to a misunderstanding when Xander was actually trying to grill Larry about whether he was a werewolf) and tries to make sure his friends and schoolmates understand that he is not gay. He is ... dating a girl, Cordelia, in Season 2, so his preference for women seems clear.

A brave young man who came from a less than perfect upbringing, Xander walked away from the altar when the pressure of marriage to Anya seemed too great. Realizing his mistake, he slowly worked his way back into her life only to have her taken in the final battle which destroyed Sunnydale. Prior to the fight against the First Evil, Xander lost his left eye thanks to The First's head minion, Caleb. After losing both his sight and Anya, Xander no longer felt he could be a part of the Watchers’ Council and used the funds that Willow had sent him to travel the country in his R.V. Willow... helped restore Xander's eye thanks to a sex magic spell after Anya's spirit contacted her with serious concerns about his growing depression.

Season Three sees Xander revive an interest in Willow, and a kiss that leads to Cordelia's near-fatal injury in the episode "Lovers Walk" and Anyanka's arrival in the episode "The Wish." Cordelia labels Xander "The Zeppo", mocking him for being useless compared to his friends, who are Slayers, witches, werewolves, and vampires. In an attempt to prove her wrong, Xander embarks on an adventure with a group of zombies led by tough guy Jack O'Toole, losing his virginity to Faith Lehane in the process. However, when O'Toole and his friends try to blow up Sunnydale High, Xander single-handedly puts an end to their plan. Later, he is asked to the Prom by Anya Jenkins, formerly the vengeance demon Anyanka. In the Season Three finale, "Graduation Day, Part Two," he leads Sunnydale High's students against Mayor Wilkins and his vampires.

Thing was, she hadn't 'shot the breeze' with Xander, not since before she wound up behind bars. Even before that, she couldn't remember ever really talking to Xander, at least not when sex or killing was involved. She'd only ever talked to him as the girl she was in Sunnydale the first time.
