Xanax

Xanax is the brand name for Alprazolam which produces a calming effect on the brain by literally slowing it down. The Xanax user might experience a drowsy feeling during the first few days until the body builds up a tolerance to the drug. This is an important factor of Xanax addiction because it is this tolerance that allows the user to take more and more of the drug to feel the same effects. Those with a Xanax addiction seek the drowsy feeling with a much higher intensity than normal people. The brain in those with a Xanax addiction associates Xanax with reward and stimulates pleasure centers that give the user feelings of euphoria that normal users do not experience.
One of the major difficulties with Xanax treatment for withdrawal is that it increases the initial symptoms the addict was trying to suppress. The brain, which was sedated by the Xanax, begins to race, creating even more anxiety. This, coupled with the anxiety produced by withdrawal can be extremely intense and difficult to cope with. It is well documented that the brain can actually go into seizure as it transitions from a period of medicated calm to one of hyperactivity, when the Xanax is discontinued.
Experts say among those who abuse it, Xanax addiction has a reputation for causing a "high." It slows down the central nervous system, triggering an alcohol-like high - creating a state of euphoria, lowering inhibitions and increasing sociability, Hanson said.
Xanax addiction is especially dangerous because Xanax addiction often begins with a prescription from a doctor. Xanax addiction is a common side-effect of the prescription drug Alprazolam. The drug is a central nervous system depressant and Xanax addiction occurs when the drug is abused beyond its prescribed purposes. Used to treat many disorders from anxiety to stress, Xanax addiction results in the overuse of the drug to suppress unwanted feelings. Whether the drug is taken every night to fall asleep or continually throughout the day to remain calm, Xanax addiction progresses quickly and has become a serious health problem for many people.
Upon taking Xanax, one may experience drowsiness, loss of concentration, loss of motor skills or slurred speech. Generally, these symptoms dissipate after several days. Unfortunately, after experiencing the calming effect this medication can produce, many people continue to seek an even a greater feeling of calm and will begin to increase the amount of medication they take. With an increase in Xanax use and an ever-increasing tolerance, a Xanax addiction soon emerges. As with other prescription medications such as, OxyContin, Vicodin or codeine, when tolerance increases and prescriptions run out prematurely, the person must find additional Xanax and will do whatever is necessary to avoid running out of the drug and experiencing the symptoms associated with Xanax addiction withdrawal.
For Pregnant or Nursing Mothers: The safety of Xanax during pregnancy has not been adequately studied. Studies of pregnancy and the use of other Benzodiazepines indicated that Xanax could be harmful to the fetus, especially during the first trimester including the risk of respiratory problems and muscular weakness in your baby. Infants may ... experience withdrawal symptoms. Xanax is passed into breast milk, and nursing is not recommended for patients taking this drug.
