* In its filing, Wyeth itself blurs the line between synthetic and bioidentical hormones. Most notably, Wyeth suggests that the National Institutes of Health Women's Health Initiative (WHI) studied bioidentical hormone therapies. It did not. Rather, WHI studied Wyeth's products exclusively and the study was cut short in 2002 after the data demonstrated that Premarin(R) (synthetic estrogen) increased the risk of stroke and the components of Prempro(R), Premarin plus progestin (synthetic progesterone), increased the risk of strokes, breast cancer, heart attacks and blood clots. According to Wyeth's latest annual report, sales of Premarin-related products suffered since the study ended, having declined about 32 percent to $880 million in 2004 from $1.3 billion in 2003. The physical components of BHRT are different from the components of Wyeth's synthetic hormones that were studied by WHI.

In 1943, Wyeth merged with Ayerst, McKenna and Harrison, Ltd. of Canada. With this merger came Premarin, the world's first conjugated estrogen medicine, which to this day is one of Wyeth's flagship products. Wyeth was one of 22 companies selected by the government in 1944 to manufacture penicillin for the military, and later for the general public.

The Wyeth analysis is Cornell's second art project. The process can be painstakingly slow: Scanning a portion the size of a quarter took nine hours. "We could speed up things by a factor of 10 or 100 with enough resources, such as a new kind of X-ray detector that can count X-rays much faster than current technology," Woll says.

For every victim of PPH and their family, the tragedy is increased because the evidence clearly demonstrates that the Wyeth, the manufacturer of fen phen, knew that their products could cause heart failure, valve replacement surgery and / or death. In fact, to increase sales and profit the Wyeth covered up and hid the fact that fen phen is a deadly drug. Because of Wyeth's actions, thousands of people across the country have been afflicted with PPH and tens of thousands have heart valve problems. The evidence demonstrates that Wyeth knew and hid these facts.

Under Pyle's tutelage, Wyeth's innate talent blossomed. Within a year he had his first illustration published and it was a cover for a 1903 issue of The Saturday Evening Post. Another early market was Success Magazine. Soon he was a regular contributor to Harpers, McClures, Scribners and others, and a steady feature at the Post.The image at right is from the December 1904 issue of Scribners.
