Wwe Wrestlemania 21: Studio Gigante
built 169 days ago
Currently in development by Studio Gigante, WWE WrestleMania 21 will be the new horse in the stable of console wrestling. If you don’t know who Studio Gigante are, they are the developers of the critically acclaimed Tao Feng for Xbox. Tao Feng sported some very nice graphics as well as real time bruising, bleeding, and target specific limb damage. If WWE WrestleMania 21 is anywhere near as entertaining as Tao Feng, wrestling fanatics will have a ball with this one.

Yukes, who previously developed Wrestlemania X8 and Wrestlemania XIX on the Gamecube, continued with WWE titles on that platform and created WWE Day of Reckoning, a solid entry into the series. Meanwhile, the only sign of RAW was on the PS2, who simply adopted the name with WWE SmackDown vs. RAW but didn't retain any of RAW's gameplay elements - the Xbox didn't feature a WWE title in 2004 and instead pushed to release a new game, WWE Wrestlemania 21 in 2005, to coincide with the actual event in early April. At the helm this time was first time wrestling developers Studio Gigante, the company founded by Mortal Kombat co-creator John Tobias and designers of Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus. So, Wrestlemania is almost here but has it been worth the wait? More importantly, will Xbox owners finally get a wrestling game to be proud to call their own? ...Not a freaking chance.

WWE Wrestlemania 21 is Studio Gigante's first try at a wrestling game, although the third WWE game on the XBox. The game has 45 of the WWE's 'Superstars' in it, all motion captured, with their trademark entrances and music, loads of different arenas and a pretty comprehensive list of fight types. If that's not enough you can ... create your own wrestler and take them into a career in the WWE, wrestling with all the other known characters.

WrestleMania 21 is the first wrestling title developed by Studio Gigante, so that right there raises some red flags. You cant really blame SG for the poor state of WM21... because it was THQ that set the deadline that they wanted this game to be released around the same time as the actual WrestleMania 21 event. Given a few more months (or a year
) this game could have probably been decent. In its current state it is filled with bugs and glitches and it is hard to shake the feeling that it is only really halfway done.

Wrestlemania 21 has the same licensed tracks from Smackdown! vs. Raw. That being said, you already know this portion of the game is a failure. For a game to have the same licensed tracks, it feels as if they had no time left and grabbed the music from Smackdown and inserted it in Wrestlemania 21. Studio Gigante is lucky for the Xbox’s hardware supporting custom soundtracks as it does help make up for the lack of a worthy set of tracks. Another good factor is the career mode having their own voice-overs rather than seeing the scenes containing just written dialogue.

With WrestleMania 21, THQ turned development duties over to Studio Gigante (Tao Feng). If you feared that the gamemaker--co-founded by John Tobias, best known as half of the team that created Mortal Kombat--might opt for a wrestling game that's gory and gruesome, you can relax. There are no fatalities, no projectiles snaking out of a fighter's palm and no blood. In fact, no liquid graces the ring other than some sweat and, of course, Triple H's trademark water spray.
