In early 2002, the WWE introduced a new plot twist with the brand split - RAW and Smackdown! would become two entirely independent shows. Wrestlers took part in a draft, appearing exclusively on whatever show they were drafted to. Much drama would soon be made of wrestlers 'defecting' to the other show after the draft ended. When Brock Lesnar, WWE Champion, defected to Smackdown!, RAW created a new heavyweight title of its own. New tag team title belts were created for Smackdown!

[W]ith WWE returning to the Tucson Arena Monday for a live (on the East Coast, at least; it's tape-delayed a few hours here) taping of its flagship show, "Raw," there's likely a lot more preoccupying the thoughts of spectators. Namely the recent death of one of the company's marquee performers, Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy and son Daniel — which was, as is common knowledge now, quickly ruled by investigators to be a double murder-suicide. And if that wasn't bad enough, it's led to seemingly endless media scrutiny probing why it is that so many wrestlers die young, with the main focus being the alleged use of steroids by many professional wrestling competitors.

WWE.com confirmed that Umaga will defend his Intercontinental Championship against Jeff Hardy on the RAW taping. Umaga is ... presumed to be one of the suspended wrestlers, so a title change appears likely.
