   The World Trade Organization by its own admission is not just about trade. According to the WTO website, liberalizing trade actually takes a back seat to its more activist ambitions, such as “development”-- a euphemism for wealth-transfers from rich nations to poor nations.

   The World Trade Organization is a rules-based, member-driven, nongovernmental organization (NGO). All decisions are made by member countries, and the rules are the outcome of negotiations among members. The WTO is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade among nations. At its heart are international agreements, negotiated and signed by the 148-member trading countrieses and ratified in their parliaments. Countries continue to be accepted as they evolve. The goal of the WTO is to help producers of goods and services, exporters, and importers conduct their business.

   The World Trade Organization ruled in 2004 and 2005 that U.S. laws discriminated against foreign competitors, in violation of global trade rules and the United States' own ratified commitments to the W.T.O. This year, after failing to comply with a W.T.O. ruling that U.S. laws be reformed, the United States announced it would withdraw those commitments, entitling W.T.O. member countries to fair compensation for the lost market access. The closure of the $100 billion U.S. gaming market had financial ramifications far beyond the gaming industry itself, wiping out billions of dollars from the balance sheets of European institutional investors, pension funds, and financial services companies as well as affecting the many supplier industry sectors to the gaming industry.

   The WTO's mandate is to continue and expand the liberalization of world commerce begun by GATT, eliminating tariffs and other impediments to free trade. Unlike GATT, which dealt principally with tangible goods, the WTO ... is responsible for telecommunications, financial and other services, and intellectual property such as books, films, music recordings, and computer software. Members agree to abide by WTO regulations and decisions, but the organization has no enforcement powers. Problems are dealt with by consensus, and a dispute settlement panel has been set up to handle conflicts among members. The principal executive body of the WTO is the General Council. The WTO Secretariat, with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, is headed by a director-general.

   Created in 1995 to enforce and expand GATT (the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade), the World Trade Organization is the most powerful legislative and judicial body in the world. By promoting the 'free trade' agenda of multinational corporations above the interests of local communities, working families, and the environment, the WTO has systematically undermined democracy around the world.
8. Nirvana (Band) -- Songs
   Following repeated recommendations by Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, Nirvana signed to DGC Records in 1990.[13] The band subsequently began recording its first major label album, Nevermind. They were offered a number of producers to choose from, but ultimately held out for Butch Vig.[14] Rather than recording at Vig's Madison studio as they had in 1990, they shifted to Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, California. For two months, the band worked through a variety of songs in their catalog. Some of the songs, including "In Bloom" and "Breed", had been in the band's repertoire for years, while others, including "On a Plain" and "Stay Away", lacked finished lyrics until mid-way through the recording process.[15] After the recording sessions were completed, Vig and the band set out to mix the album. However, the recording sessions had run behind schedule and the resulting mixes were deemed unsatisfactory. Slayer mixer Andy Wallace was brought in to create the final mix.

    Grumbling delegates to a World Trade Organization meeting finally began their negotiations in earnest yesterday after Seattle police shut down any possibility of a second day of chaos on the nearby streets. Backed by the National Guard and another 350 state troopers, close to 1,200 Seattle riot police cordoned off the downtown core, arresting hundreds of protesters who managed to sneak into the no-go zones.
